Mosul Campaign Day Twenty-Three, Nov 8, 2016

The Kurds declared that Bashiqa east of Mosul was finally cleared. They made the same announcement the day before but there was still fighting going on in small pockets. Now the Peshmerga said those were cleared up.

The army and Federal police were still pushing from the north and south. The 9th Division and Federal Police freed 10 villages in the south, and the 16th Division two in the north. (1)

The Islamic State blew up another mosque in Mosul. The United Nations reported that during the opening days of November the group took away up to 300 former soldiers from Mawali and Tal Afar west of Mosul. Their fate was unknown. Before it lost Hamam al-Alil the militants also forced 1,500 families out and took them to Mosul likely to be used as human shields. When the campaign started IS was emptying villages in the south as they retreated and pushing them into Hamam al-Alil. Now they have been moved to Mosul itself. Iraq Oil Report had another southern town Abu Saif that was emptied of people who were forced into the city as well. At the same time, the Federal police rescued 600 people from Hamam al-Alil when it was liberated.
